About COTA National Seniors - What has COTA achieved?
Since its beginnings in Old People's Welfare Councils in 1951, Council on the
Ageing (COTA) has fought to improve the lifestyle of older Australians. In recent
years, COTA has been particularly active in the following areas:
-
Health
- Working to maintain and improve Medicare, COTA has lobbied for the reduction
of waiting times for surgery, dental care to pensioners and improved pharmaceutical
benefits. It has informed older people about pharmaceuticals through peer
education projects.
-
Housing and Residential Care
- COTA's efforts, through liaison with State and Federal Governments,
have led to improved standards in retirement villages, nursing homes,
hostels and special accommodation. COTA is currently working hard to try
and ensure the best outcomes from the Coalition Government's structural
reforms to residential care. Click
here for COTA comments and updates.
-
Retirement Income
- COTA has fought for the interests
of older people on issues such as income and assets tests, and has helped
persuade government to extend concessions to all pensioners.
-
Age Discrimination
- COTA is at the forefront in lobbying
State and Federal Governments to have age included as a grounds for complaint
in anti-discrimination legislation covering access to employment, financial
services and housing. Click here for recent
details.
-
Community Services
- COTA has worked closely with State and local governments
to improve the range and quality of services to older people. COTA has
helped to initiate a range of organisations and services with national
significance, including Retirement Village Residents' Associations, Abbeyfield,
U3A, Continence Foundation, Meals on Wheels, Senior Citizens Week, Carers
Associations.
